The UAN, as commonly known as Universal Account Number, is a number provided to all the Members by the Employee Provident Fund Organization (EPFO). It helps the employee to get all his PF details irrespective of the organization where he works.
Let us now, first understand the meaning of UAN.
What is UAN?
The EPF UAN is a 12- digit number given to the employees who are the Employee Provident Fund Members. As the employee keeps changing his job, the EPFO provides him with a new PF number and member id, but UAN remains the same. During the service period of the employee, the UAN remains transferable and does not get changed at all.
Although new provident fund number gets created when an employee changes his job, to not face any issue, it gets connected to the existing Universal Account Number.
Note: In case if you have got allotted two UANs, then you should notify your employer as well as EPFO immediately so that old UAN may be deactivated and the existing EPF balance could get transferred to new Provident fund account.
[UAN Registration]-How to generate your UAN number?
A person can acquire Universal Account Number from his employer. When you join the company for the first time, your employer will ask you for a few documents to generate the UAN number. It is a one-time process. If the newly joined employee already has his UAN, he can provide the details of the same to the employer and can continue using the same account.
Let us go through the process of UAN registration online by an employee.
From your employer
The employer can effortlessly give you, your Universal Account Number which is allotted to you by EPFO. UAN is also printed on the salary slips by some employers.
By UAN Portal
In case, if the employer does not give you, your Universal Account Number, you can get it yourself from the UAN portal. The following process should get followed to get your UAN registration number:
Step 1: Visit the official UAN portal.
Step 2: Tick on ‘Know your UAN Status.
Step 3: Opt for the EPFO office, which falls under your jurisdiction along with the state from the options available. After that, Put in your details like PF number/Member ID, name, date of birth, mobile number, and captcha code. Also, the salary slip given to you by your employer can provide you with PF number/ Member ID. Then, click on ‘Get Authorization Pin’ option.
Step 4: Enter the PIN which was generated and received by you on your mobile number and then click on ‘Validate OTP.’ Finally, click on ‘UAN’ button.
Step 5: You will get your Universal Account Number on your mobile number.

- Bank Details with IFSC Code
- Passport (Optional)
- Driver’s License (Optional)
- Ration Card (Optional)
- Voters Identity (Optional)
- National Population Registry (Optional)

[UAN Activation]-How to activate UAN?
To have a Universal Account Number is not sufficient. To enjoy the benefits of UAN, the employee needs to activate its UAN. The following is the procedure for UAN number activation, provided on the UAN’s actual website:
Step 1: UAN’s official portal is to be visited by the employee
Step 2: After that, the employee needs to click on ‘Activate UAN.’
Step 3: The employee gets directed to the page wherein the following details are to be filled in:
UAN, Member ID, Aadhar Card Number, PAN, Name, Date of Birth, Mobile Number, Email – ID, and the Captcha Code.
The employee also needs to choose his state and office from the dropdown box. The employee should click on the ‘Get Authorization Pin.’ The employee will receive a pin on his mobile number.
Step 4: The employee should then click on “I Agree” tab which will be available in the Disclaimer section. Then, he should fill in the pin that he got on his mobile number. Finally, he should click on ‘Validate OTP and Activate UAN’ button.
The employee will get a password for his future access to UAN on the registered mobile number after once the UAN is activated.
Activation of UAN through Umang app and Message
EPFO launched a mobile application in the year 2015, which can be used by an employee to get his UAN activated. To activate the UAN, the employee should first download the ‘Umang’ application and later should put in their login details along with their mobile number. All the information that is needed is received after once the details get filled.
The employee can also get his UAN activated by sending a message on 7738299899.
Before the Universal Account Number (UAN) got introduced, the employees who had made payments for the Provident Fund were given a member id by their employers. So, the employees used to have many member ids as they worked with too many employers.
Thus, UAN simplified the whole process for the Provident fund. Now, you no need to get and manage separate member id, with just one unique 12 digit number, you can manage all of your contribution made towards in provident fund during your service tenure in a single account with ease.
